Any suggestions welcome, I've ordered a couple of replacement carts for the ones that are low to hold me over in the meantime, but would prefer to fix this Epson intrusion if it can be done. Now, genuine apparently isn't good enough for them.ĭoes anyone know of a workaround.full factory reset or downgrading firmware that may fix this? I did find a few chip-altering or firmware programs available for a fee, but they didn't seem too reliable, and I still like the printer enough that I don't want to destroy it (or disable the ink level feature and end up frying the print head). I do remember warnings with offered firmware updates that stated it "may cause a rejection of third party carts, and don't remember specifically if I installed them, but since I intended to use only genuine inks, wasn't too concerned.

My Canon Pro-100 is now working well for non-fading large color prints, so perhaps I can do without the DuraBrite inks and pay Epson back for its sleaziness in doing this. No big financial loss, but I find it irritating enough that I just may switch to non-Epson inks.

I know people convert these to dye-sub printers with all sorts of inks, so perhaps an earlier firmware update disabled this, but I've never heard before that the "initial" cartridges would not work as replacements. No recent firmware updates were done that I know of, and I tried various workarounds such as putting in all the -I carts at once, but no good. Since this is genuine Epson ink, I found this somewhat annoying.I could use third party carts which would work fine, but since I like using the Durabrite pigment ink, I had decided to stick with genuine ink. The price was good, both cost a bit less than one set from Epson would have been, but when I went to replace a magenta cartridge, I got the message "Initial cartridge detected, printer is already initialized", then another saying they can be used for initial setup only. From a thread a few months back, I decided to try a couple of sets of genuine Epson initial cartridges (EBay) for my printer, based on the recommendation here that they worked well.
